Name: Alepoythrope (Werefox)
History of Race:
Alepoythropes, or werefoxes, are members of a small branch of the Lycathrope genus. No one knows exactly how they came to be, but most agree that their relationship with the werewolves must be the same as that of wolves and foxes - who share the same origin.
The werefox species is weak in numbers, and they are rare sights South of the Arctic Circle. Most reside in the North of the Scandinavian countries, and some speculate that their true origins might lie further North, perhaps as far as the Arctic continent.
Typically fair and elegant, compared to their brute relatives, some of them have been portrayed in ancient fairy tales of the Scandinavian indigenous people, the Sámi, as deities of the Snow, for which they would pray to for help during harsh winters.
The werefox species is divided, and it has been assumed that there are as many races of werefoxes as there are races of foxes. These are the traits of the two only known races of werefoxes;
Vulpes Alepoythrope (Red Werefox):
The most common of the werefoxes, if "common" is a word that could ever be true about any of the werefoxes. Their appearance is striking, all of them having full, red hair, completed by their watery blue eyes.
The Vulpes Alepoythrope's transformed self is lesser than the werewolf in size, and they are more slender and swift - although they lose in strenght.
The Red Werefox, although more elegant, are brutes just as werewolves. They have a weak temper, and will easily get drawn into conflicts. Yet, they are proud, and faithful, and because of their temper, they will defend their kin and friends to the death - if they have to.
Alopex Alepoythrope (Silver Werefox):
They are rare, even for creatures of myth and legend. Their eyes a silvery blue, their hair pale silver also, they are the origin of many tales of lust and woe (although not in the tales of the Sámi, whom the Silver Werefoxes have loved and protected).
All of them slender, not strong at all, they aren't great fighters. Their strength lies in their cunning wisdom, and their cool hearts. For the Silver Werefoxes know much about the world (although they very rarely stray far from their homes), for their eldest speak with the animals, and the animals talk often to birds who travel the world.
The Alopex Alepoythrope do not transform into beasts at all. Instead, they transform into true Arctic Foxes.
Their silvery white fur and their small stature enables them to blend in with their natural landscape, and they will never be found, lest the pursuers notice them first.
To help increase their stealth, as if by magic, they can summon thick snow from the sky - in which their enemies would be blind to their presence.
Tendencies: Werefoxes differ from Werewolves in their inability to "infect" their enemies/victims. Unlike Werewolves, they can only reproduce by mating with another of their kin. Thus they also lack their lust for human flesh and blood, and they are generally quite quiet - this is true also for the brutal Red Werefoxes (they are typically calm unless provoked).
Werefoxes (at least of the races currently known) typically prefers cold climats (this is especially true for the Silver Werefoxes), but the Red Werefoxes can endure even Mediterranean climates. Silver Werefoxes will weaken fast in warm weather, and they need to cool down often.
Strengths:
Vulpes Alepoythrope (Red Werefox):
- Physically strong (although not as strong as the Werewolves)
- Faithful (they stick together, and seldom betray one another)
- Swift (they are quite fast, and can easily travel between neighboring countries within short time)
- Can transform into beasts (similar to Werewolves, but lesser in size and strength)
- Can not die of age
Alopex Alepoythrope (Silver Werefox):
- Very knowledgeable
- Elders can communicate with animals (birds are usually most convenient)
- They can transform into the shapes of Arctic Foxes (enabling them to blend with their local wildlife and climate)
- Can summon thick, snowy weather
- Can not die of age
Weaknesses:
Vulpes Alepoythrope (Red Werefox):
- Short tempered and easily provoked
- Faithful (and stubborn. They will defend their kin and friends till the death, if they have to - and they will typically not back down once agitated, no matter the strength of their foe)
Alopex Alepoythrope (Silver Werefox):
- Very weak
- Weakens further in warm weather (which in turn requires them to cool down often, forcing them to risk losing their stealth and cover)
- Are guardians of Humans from the days of old, and will not hurt them (leaving them vulnerable to abuse from the humans they love)
